What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is interrogated it transmits a signal encoded with the four-digit code. The signal is referred to as an SQUAWK code and forms the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit a specific message to air traffic control in the situation of an emergency, or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable to communicate via radio. They are vital to ensure safe flying.

Each aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar queries by displaying an identifier code. This enables ATC to identify the aircraft in a busy radar screen. Transponders can be found in various modes that differ in how they respond to interrogation. Mode A only transmits the code, while mode C also contains altitude information.
